The Montreal Wyndham Hotel

Pinhole Camera Project

On April 28, Montreal art photographer and pinhole enthusiast Guy Glorieux will celebrate the 2nd Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day by converting a room from the Wyndham Montreal Hotel, one of Montreal’s leading hotels, into a giant pinhole camera.  He will be working with photographer and visual artist Gisèle Comtois and with photographers Gaétan Plouffe and Gaétan Villandré to create a wall-size triptych pinhole image of the Montreal landscape.

The hotel is located in the heart of the cultural district and overlooks an exceptional combination of the city’s architectural landmarks cast against the historical Mont Royal.  It is a privileged site which M Glorieux chose for this project, since it is on the vast expanse facing it that some 2,500 montrealers answered the call of  photographer Spencer Tunick on May 26, 2001 to undress at daybreak and be photographed in their most natural state.

This project runs parallel to that of  Mr. Shi Guo Rui and Mr. Zernike Au in China, when they will turn one of the Watch Tower of the Great Wall of China into a giant pinhole camera as well.

The Great Wall Pinhole Project

Not a single part of this project could have happened without the generous assistance of several sponsors.  We thank the following sponsors:

  • The Wyndham Montreal Hotel, for  providing the hotel room.
  • Ilford Canada, for providing the paper emulsion to create the giant negative and positive images.

  • The University of Montreal’s Service des Activités Culturelles, for providing the darkroom facilities.

  • Contact Image, one of the large commercial photo lab in Montreal, for providing technical assistance.

  • Atelier Soleil, a tiny Montreal bookbinder, for providing the handcrafted book to keep the photographs documenting the project.

  • Zero Image, Hong Kong’s pinhole camera maker, for hosting this web site and donating equipment.

Behind the names of these organizations, there are many individuals who offered their time and effort. Our many personal thanks to them.

The project is dedicated to the spirit of cooperation which has allowed a small group of individuals from all over the world  to work together and turn the last Sunday of April into a day of worldwide celebration for pinhole photographers.
